TSC Destination Collection: St. Martin & Sint Maarten
The One Caribbean Island Where You Can Experience Two Countries in One Day
There are islands with beautiful beaches. There are islands with incredible food. Then there is St. Martin.
This is the only Caribbean island shared by two nations. The northern side belongs to France and is known as Saint Martin. The southern side belongs to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is called Sint Maarten. There is no border checkpoint, no passport control, and no fences separating the two. Instead, you simply drive across an invisible line and suddenly everything changes. The language, architecture, cuisine, culture, and atmosphere all take on a distinctly different personality.
For cruise guests, your ship will dock in Philipsburg on the Dutch side, Sint Maarten. Yet within minutes you can be sipping French rosé in a seaside café, wandering colorful villages filled with boulangeries, or spending the afternoon at one of the Caribbean’s most famous beaches.
Anthony Bourdain once said, “Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life and travel leave marks on you.”
Few destinations capture that feeling better than St. Martin. Every crossing from one side to the other feels like discovering a completely different island.
1. Why Go?
St. Martin is not about checking beaches off a list. It is about experiencing contrast.
Spend your morning wandering Dutch waterfront shops, enjoy lunch with French wine and fresh seafood, then finish your afternoon floating in warm Caribbean water before watching aircraft descend dramatically over the beach. Few places offer that much variety in a single day.
2. Experiences You Shouldn’t Miss
If this is your first visit, these experiences belong at the top of your list.
- Walk the colorful boardwalk in Philipsburg on the Dutch side.
- Spend time at Orient Beach on the French side, one of the Caribbean’s most famous clothing-optional beaches.
- Enjoy lunch overlooking Grand Case Bay on the French side.
- Watch airplanes fly astonishingly low over Maho Beach at the Sunset Beach Bar on the Dutch side. Topless ladies have been reported to get a free drink! https://sunsetsxm.com/
- Take a catamaran or boat cruise around the coastline. This is one of Miss Lynn’s favorite ways to spend the day. We recommend a private charter with paul@captainalan.com
- Explore Marigot, the charming French capital filled with boutiques and cafés.
- Swim in the crystal-clear waters at Mullet Bay on the Dutch side. This is only about 7 miles from the cruise port – but leave plenty of time (30-45 minutes) in case of traffic and bridge openings.
Each experience showcases a different personality of the island.
3. Hidden Local Favorites
Many visitors never leave the cruise port area. That is a mistake.
Instead, head to Friar’s Bay on the French side, where locals gather for long lunches beneath swaying palms. The beach is quieter than Orient Beach and offers an authentic Caribbean atmosphere.
Another favorite is Pic Paradis, the highest point on the island. From here you can enjoy panoramic views stretching across both countries and neighboring islands.
While many cruises sail before sunset, if you have a late departure, consider Simpson Bay on the Dutch side, where sailboats return to the marina as restaurants begin filling with locals instead of tourists.
4. The Food & Drink
If there is one reason food lovers return to St. Martin, it is because nowhere else in the Caribbean blends French culinary tradition with island flavors quite like this.
Grand Case on the French side is often called the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean. Fine dining restaurants line the waterfront, while casual lolos serve grilled lobster, ribs, snapper, and barbecue alongside locals enjoying a slow evening meal.
Do not leave without trying:
- Fresh Caribbean lobster
- Conch fritters
- French pastries from a neighborhood boulangerie
- Accras, the classic Caribbean saltfish fritters
- Fresh mahi-mahi with tropical fruit salsa
- Truffles on Everything when they are offered!
Pair lunch with a chilled bottle of French rosé, then finish the afternoon with locally made guavaberry liqueur, the island’s signature spirit.
5. Culture Through Experience
The island’s history is fascinating, yet its present-day culture is even more rewarding.
Spend time speaking with restaurant owners in Grand Case. Browse open-air markets in Marigot. Listen to Caribbean music drifting through Philipsburg as cruise passengers mix with locals finishing their workday.
Life moves differently here. Long lunches are encouraged. Conversations last longer than expected. Meals are rarely rushed.
That slower rhythm becomes contagious.
6. Romance, Lifestyle & Nightlife
For TSC travelers, St. Martin offers something especially unique.
Orient Beach on the French side is one of the Caribbean’s best-known clothing-optional beaches. While portions remain family-friendly, the southern end of the beach attracts adults looking for a relaxed European atmosphere where topless sunbathing and clothing-optional experiences are completely normal.
Nearby, you’ll also find beach clubs offering excellent food, cocktails, music, and comfortable loungers that encourage spending the entire afternoon by the sea.
Two tips for Orient Beach: Make plans for your taxi driver to pick you up for the return to the ship – sometimes taxis are hard to find on the clothing-optional end of this beach. Leave more time than you need to get back; Traffic and bridges can provide big delays.
Insider Tip – Some of our favorite clients love to rent a dune buggy or an ATV to explore the island. Make sure to give yourself enough time to return before the ship sails.
7. Cruise Port Strategy
Your cruise ship will dock in Philipsburg on the Dutch side, Sint Maarten.
If this is your first visit, it is worth leaving the immediate shopping district and exploring both sides of the island.
One excellent plan includes:
- Morning in Philipsburg
- Scenic drive across the island
- Lunch in Grand Case on the French side
- Relaxing afternoon at Orient Beach
- Return to Philipsburg before sailing
8. Miss Lynn’s Favorite Discovery
Many Caribbean islands are beautiful. Very few are interesting.
St. Martin stands apart because every hour feels different. One moment you’re ordering croissants and espresso in a French café. Soon afterward, you’re enjoying Caribbean barbecue beside turquoise water. Before long, you’re back on a Dutch waterfront sipping a frozen cocktail while watching mega yachts glide into the harbor.
That constant change keeps the island exciting from beginning to end.
9. Practical Tips
- Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.
- Allow extra travel time when crossing the island because traffic can become heavy during peak cruise hours.
- Reserve beach chairs early at Orient Beach if arriving during high season.
- Wear reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the island’s marine ecosystem.
10. Why St. Martin Changes You
Most destinations ask you to explore one culture.
St. Martin invites you to experience two.
It reminds us that borders do not have to divide people. Instead, they can create opportunities to celebrate different traditions, cuisines, and ways of life within a remarkably small piece of paradise.
You arrive expecting another beautiful Caribbean island.
You leave realizing you’ve experienced two worlds, two cultures, and one unforgettable day.
That is what makes St. Martin worthy of the TSC Destination Collection.Experience Venice with TSC
